Running is the activity used the most worldwide. We all know that running is good for our bone density, muscle, and cardiovascular strength and running can be done anywhere in any sort of environment.
However, depending on the intensity and frequency of our runs, this activity can put strain on our body. Running generates a lot of force – up to 5 times our body weight so if we think about it, each time our feet connect with the ground, our weight-bearing joints have to absorb this force.
Here, I will focus on the crucial role that “running shoes” play and why you should really consider investing in them.
As stated by Dr. Michael Scarcella: “Running shoes are the only protective equipment runners have to safeguard themselves from injury.” While they may not always make you run faster, they can help reduce pain and the repeated stress of high-impact activity on the joints.
Do running shoes really make a difference?
Yes, running shoes do make a difference. Running shoes are constantly evolving thanks to the brands for their creative innovations. You might think that companies keep bringing new models on the market so we can be tempted to keep buying shoes. But in all fairness, the evolution and the quality of the running shoes over the years have been fantastic.
Brands have invested more time and money in the research so they can have a better understanding of the biomechanics of the body. They make various shoes for the type of runner you are. This means there is an ideal running shoe out there for you.
Which running shoes should I choose?
When you are buying running shoes there are various factors to take into consideration. I always recommend my clients to visit specialized shops. Most of them do a great job in helping you find the best make and type.
As an overall idea, look at the points stated below:
1. The surface you are running on: Whether you run on sidewalks, gravel, grass, on a rubberized track, the type of surface changes your body’s needs.
2. Your foot type and shape: Shoes are categorized in three ways: neutral, stability, and motion control running shoes. The height of your arch and your pronation (the amount your ankle rolls inwards or outwards) influence your running gait. A proper foot assessment would help you uncover your foot type. It is also primordial that you choose a brand that is good for your foot shape.
3. Health and Injuries: If you have had any injuries (or if you are prone to injuries), it is important that you take them into consideration when you select your running shoes. Different levels of cushioning and heel drop address different health concerns and injuries, like rheumatoid arthritis and Achilles tendonitis.
Running shoes should be adapted to your specific running gait, like whether you land more heavily on your midfoot or heel when you run. This can reduce pain and joint strain.
4. Your budget: On average, a good pair of running shoes cost around 130 €. We all have different budgets, but I always think that if people are serious about running, the investment is worth it. Good shoes will prevent you from injuries and make the experience more enjoyable.
5. Comfort: Ultimately your shoes should be comfortable. Ignore the look, the brand, and the hype. Choose comfort over everything else because this is your body you are trying to protect.
There are even more factors to consider when choosing your shoes such as your weight, your muscular strengths, your range of motion, your balance, your stride, and your speed.
So, if you have a pair of running shoes on your Christmas wish list, then I hope this article helps you find the right ones.
